Martha Johnson graduated from the University of Guelph with an Honours BFA, attended Arts Sake in Toronto, and was mentored by Tom Hodgson (Painter's Eleven). She has been instructing all skill levels of painting and drawing over 25 years at Avenue Road Arts School in Toronto and leads outdoor painting workshops at various locations including Algonquin Park, Grand Manan NB, Provence France, and Union Island in the Caribbean. She has her own teaching platform specializing in short museum-based workshops and a mentoring program titled Mastering for students with an existing art practice. Her work is held in public, corporate and private collections worldwide and has sold in Waddington's Concrete Sale. Martha's work investigates the strata in subject matter, and her practice is profoundly affected by local environment, history and legend. Current figurative imagery references transition, transformation, androgyny and perception. She is known for painting on unusual surfaces, a result of having spent many years designing sets and costumes for theatre and film. Her 2017 solo exhibition, Shadow Red, included works crafted on vintage and antique woollen blankets illustrating a deep family connection to the Tom Thomson mystery. Important ongoing bodies of work Survey The Valley and Kent Island and the Albatross, encounter cohabitation of urban and rural wildlife with human encroachment. Martha is currently represented by Art Interiors in Toronto. #highpinespainter
